केदारनाथ जी मंदिर के बाहर के भाग में स्थित नंदी बैल के वाहन के रूप में विराजमान तथा स्थापित होने का आधार तब बना जब द्वापर युग में महाभारत के युद्ध के दौरान पांडवों की विजय पर और भातर हत्या के पाप से मुक्ति के लिए भगवान शंकर जी के दर्शन करना चाहते थे। इसके फलस्वरूप वह भगवान शंकर जी के पास जाना चाहते और उनका आशीर्वाद पाना चाहते थे परंतु भगवान शंकर उनसे बहुत नाराज थे। Kedarnath History in Hindi

पांडव भगवान शंकर के दर्शन के लिए काशी तो पहुंचे परंतु भगवान शंकर ने उन्हें वहां दर्शन ही नहीं दिए। इसके पश्चात पांडवों ने हिमालय पर्वत जाने का फैसला किया और हिमालय पर्वत तक पहुंच गए परंतु भगवान शंकर जी पांडवों को दर्शन नहीं देना चाहते थे इसलिए भगवान शंकर वहां से भी अंतर्ध्यान हो गए और केदार में वास किया। पांडव भी भगवान शंकर का आशीर्वाद पाने के लिए एकजुटता और लगन से भगवान शंकर को ढूंढते – ढूंढते केदार पहुंच गए। Kedarnath History in Hindi

भगवान शंकर ने केदार पहुँचकर बैल का रूप धारण कर लिया था। केदार पर बहुत सारी बैल उपस्थित थी। पांडवों को कुछ संदेह हुआ इसलिए भीम ने अपना विशाल रूप धारण किया और दो पहाड़ों पर अपने पैर रख दिए भीम के इस रूप से भयभीत होकर बैल भीम के पैर के नीचे से दोनों पैरों में से होते हुए भागने लगे परंतु एक बैल भीम के पैर के नीचे से जाने को तैयार नहीं थी। Kedarnath History in Hindi
